3D concrete printing
Why not build the “perfect wave skate obstacle” in Eindhoven that every (skate)boarder wants to ride? The 3D concrete printing (3DCP) technology allows for more form freedom in design. Even natural shapes like waves can be reproduced.
Studio mo man tai explores the boundaries of 3D printing together with BAM Infra and Weber Beamix.
We want to create obstacles for Urban Sports based on the concept that nature knows best. Skateboarding as we know it, was probably born when surfers in California wanted something to do when there were no waves.
Much speaks for the use of 3D concrete printing to produce skate obstacles; it allows for more design freedom. Even made to measure or one-off forms are possible. Once a 3D file is created the design is (parametric) scaleable. The resulting objects fullfill all mechanical/physical requirements (like weather and vandalism proof, transportable and theft proof)
Through a modular set up endless configurations are possible for – for instance – pump tracks.

The making of “The perfect wave” will be presented at Area51 – the largest indoor park in the Benelux, located on Strijp-S with the main entrance on the Ketelhuisplein.
Next to the skate objects the installation will also be a visual treat – forms, colours and materials amplify one another and invite to a novel visual experience.
Durst Haptic 2.5D wallcovering
The collaboration with biobased supersize printing innovator BIG Impact gives the project an extra ‘dimension’. Colourful graphical patterns designed by Ulrike Jurklies will be shown on different embodiments. We are proud to showcase that printing in relief, is possible; Durst Haptic 2.5D is the first supersize print production relief printer in the world one of “The perfect wave” graphic designs will be presented on Walltex Biovate: the first biobased contract suited wallcovering developed by BIG impact.
Recycle & Upcycle
With our “The perfect wave” installation we also add value to used material by upcycling it into another lasting product. After Dutch Design Week we will recycle – as part of BIGReturn – the polyester wallcovering by producing a limited edition, water proof skateboard-bags. Visitors can already pre-order their bag by reserving part of the material during Dutch Design Week.
“Concrete Surf Challenge” during Dutch Design Week
Studio mo man tai designed different wave obstacles – how they were developed and produced will be shown in the exhibition. The obstacles will be placed in the park inviting every skateboarder to ride them during DDW19. On Sunday the 27th of October, the last day of DDW19, Area 51 wil present a special event for skateboarders in collaboration with Brabant Open.
A unique indoor skateboard demo and tournament that connects the Brabant cities of Helmond, Eindhoven, Den Bosch, Tilburg and Breda. Visitors are invited to watch the competition/demo of young skateboarders for free.

Her concepts and products aim to surprise people and to leave a convincing impression. She often combines old traditions and modern production techniques into a timeless and simply fun design. Sustainability and responsibility towards the community are priorities for her label; mo man tai. With this installation however she wanted to offer the visitor a fleeting visual experience of a design process.
Bringing together different professionals with their specific craftsmanship and knowhow enabled her to realize this installation. Supporting partners:
From fossil based to biobased! Large format communication and decoration.
Big Impact is a tightly organized production company which provides (extreme) large format prints for the professional market only. Their fleet consists of 10 state-of-the-art setups and is unique in Europe due to its diversity. While printing 1 million meters a year they want to take their responsibility. Big Impact is continuously developing and innovating to create a more sustainable media and interior decoration world and still meet the high demands of the project market. They create a solid basis for cooperation and the best performance.

Weber Beamix is always looking ahead. In 2005 we already printed a stable wall of concrete mortar with a hand operated 3D printer, taking only 1 work shift. A world’s first. It took another 10 years before the time and market was ready for this innovative technology. Since 1965 Weber Beamix has built a reputation as leading producer & supplier of dry mortarproducts and solutions for residential & non-residential construction, the industry and civil construction. In addition to the well-known yellow-green bulk silos on the construction sites, our products can be found in packaged form in the building materials wholesale and in “Do-it-yourself”-stores. In 2008 Weber Beamix became part of Saint-Gobain, the largest and oldest producer and distributor of building materials in the world.
Starting with the “Dreamland’ expo in 2014 Ulrike Jurklies has chosen not to present the products of her label mo man tai during Dutch Design Week but to focus on realizing an installation for the yearly event starting from a more personal topic… “The time leading up to Dutch Design Week is the period to leave behind most of the commercial considerations of the design phase(s) and to solely target offering the visitors an experience… an impression; inspired by the expertise or specific materials and processes the supporting partners offer.”
Collaborating with varying professionals; all with their specific craftsmanship and know how, enable her each year to realize these exhibitions. Without the partners below this year’s project would not have been possible. Their contribution, the effort and expertise, professional cooperation and feedback was invaluable from the conception onwards.

Of German origin; Ulrike Jurklies first finished an apprenticeship in furniture making before studying industrial design in Munich. During her studies and after her graduation she worked in Hong Kong. Here she decided to start her own brand and founded the label mo man tai in 2000. In 2004 she moved to the Netherlands where the company is now located.
Next to designing her own products studio mo man tai also offers design services to third parties, focusing on creative collaboration, sustainability and (re-)use of innovative materials and processes. Since 2014, she has annually (co-)designed an installation for visitors of Dutch Design Week.The clear, uncomplicated, colourful aesthetics and the combination of old traditions with modern production techniques form the basis for timeless design and pleasure of use. Most of the mo man tai products leave the finishing touch to the customer. The brief DIY experience results in an individual mo man tai product he/she appreciates even more.
The products are sold through a variety of stores in the Netherlands and other parts of the world.
Local sources and suppliers are essential – short communication ways and nearby production sites guarantee a consistent high quality. All of the products are made in the Netherlands, Belgium or Germany. Pride in care for the environment by using leftovers of industrial production and recyclable materials has been the red thread from the beginning.

3D beton printen
Waarom niet het “perfecte golf skate-obstakel” bouwen waarop elke (skate) boarder wil rijden?
De 3D beton print (3DCP) technologie, zoals de meeste additieve technologieën, laat meer vormvrijheid bij het ontwerpen toe. Dus ook natuurlijke vormen zoals golven kunnen worden gereproduceerd. Studio mo man tai verkent samen met BAM Infra and Weber Beamix de grenzen van 3D printen.
We wilden obstakels creëren voor Urban Sports op basis van het concept dat de natuur het beste voorbeeld is. Skateboarden zoals we het kennen, is waarschijnlijk ontstaan toen surfers in Californië een bezigheid wilden als er geen golven waren.
De obstakels worden eerst gegenereerd in een CAD-systeem, uitgaande van de eigenschappen van de omgeving en de specifieke sport. Zodra een 3D-bestand is gemaakt, is het ontwerp (parametrisch) schaalbaar. De 3D-geprinte objecten voldoen aan alle mechanische / fysieke eisen (zoals weer- en vandalismebestendig, transporteerbaar en diefstalbestendig). Door een modulaire opzet zijn eindeloze configuraties mogelijk voor – bijvoorbeeld – ‘pump tracks’.
Het ontwerp process van “The perfect wave” wordt gepresenteerd in Area51 – het grootste overdekte skate park in de Benelux, gelegen op Strijp-S en met de hoofdingang op het Ketelhuisplein. Naast de skate-obstakels zal de installatie ook een visuele traktatie zijn – vormen, kleuren en materialen versterken elkaar en nodigen uit tot een nieuwe visuele ervaring.
Durst Haptic 2.5D wandbekleding
De samenwerking met het ‘supersize’ innovatieve BIG Impact geeft aan het project – letterlijk – een extra dimensie..Er zullen kleurrijke grafische patronen; ontworpen door Ulrike Jurklies en gedrukt op verschillende materialen tentoongesteld worden. We zijn ook trots het drukken met reliëf te presenteren – Durst Haptic 2.5D is de eerste ‘supersize’ drukmachine ter wereld die dit mogelijk maakt. Een van de “The perfect wave” dessins werd geproduceerd op Walltex Biovate: de eerste biobased wandbekleding geschikt voor de contract markt.
Recycle & Upcycle
Het overgrote deel van het materiaal van de “The perfect wave” installatie zal ‘ge-upclycled’ worden in ’n blijvend, praktisch product. Na Dutch Design Week – als deel van BIGReturn – zal de polyester wandbekleding verwerkt worden tot water proof skateboard-bags. Bezoekers kunnen hun gewenste tas reserveren door een deel van het materiaal uit te kiezen tijdens DDW.
“Concrete Surf Challenge” tijdens Dutch Design Week
Studio mo man tai ontwierp een aantal skate obstakels – hoe ze werden ontwikkeld en geproduceerd is te zien in de tentoonstelling. De objecten worden in het skatepark geplaatst zodat elke skateboarder ze tijdens DDW19 kan ervaren.
Op zondag 27 oktober; de laatste dag van DDW19 vindt de Brabant Open “Concrete Surf Challenge” plaats in skatepark Area 51. Dit evenement maakt deel uit van een reeks unieke indoor skateboard toernooien die de steden Helmond, Eindhoven, Den Bosch, Tilburg en Breda met elkaar verbinden. De deelnemers kunnen op de speciaal ontworpen obstakels hun ‘tricks’ demonstreren en bezoekers worden uitgenodigd om het event voor jonge skateboarders gratis te bekijken.

Met haar ontwerpen en producten wil ze mensen verrassen en een blijvende indruk achterlaten. Ze combineert vaak oude tradities met moderne productie technieken tot tijdloze en ‘fun’ ontwerpen. Duurzaamheid en verantwoordelijkheid voor de gemeenschap zijn de belangrijkste drijfveren voor haar label, mo man tai. Met deze installatie wil ze de toeschouwers echter ook ’n vluchtige, aangename kennismaking met het ontwerpproces bieden.

Van fossiele materialen naar ‘biobased’! Groot formaat communicatie en bekleding. Big Impact is een hecht georganiseerde produktie bedrijf dat (extreem) groot drukwerk levert voor de professionele markt. Het machinepark bestaat uit 10 state-of-the-art installaties; uniek in Europa door de brede toepasbaarheid. Terwijl er 1 miljoen meter per jaar wordt gedrukt blijft duurzaamheid hét aandachtspunt. Big Impact ontwikkelt en innoveert ononderbroken meer duurzame materialen zonder de hoge eisen van de project markt uit het oog te verliezen. Een solide basis voor samenwerking en beste prestaties!
BAM Infra is dé partner voor infrastructurele verbindingen in Nederland. Wij bieden vernieuwende oplossingen en doen dat op geheel eigen wijze. Net even anders. Net even slimmer. En altijd veilig en duurzaam. Daar staan we voor. Daar gaan we voor. En we hebben de mensen om dat te doen. Mensen met kennis en de ervaring van voorgaande projecten. Veel van de indrukwekkende infrastructuur projecten dragen bij aan de ambities van de klant. Van rotonde en verkeerstunnel, tot fietsbrug en parkeergarage. Weber Beamix kijkt altijd vooruit. In 2005 reeds hebben we een stabiele muur met ’n handmatige 3D printer geproduceerd in één werkdag. Het duurde nog 10 jaar voordat de ontwikkeling op het gebied van 3D betonprinten in een stroomversnelling kwam. Sinds 1965 bouwt Weber Beamix aan een reputatie als leidende producent en leverancier van droge mortel producten voor bouw van residentiële en niet-residentiële projecten.
Naast de welbekende geel-groene bulk silos bij bouwprojecten zijn de producten te vinden in de groot- en kleinhandel van bouwmaterialen. In 2008 werd Weber Beamix deel van de Saint-Gobain groep; de wereldwijd grootste producent en verdeler van bouwmaterialen.
Area51 is het grootste urban culture en sport centrum van de Benelux met meer dan 2800 vierkante meter in een van de industrieel erfgoed gebouwen van Strijp-S. Sinds 2006 staat Area51 ook steeds meer bekend als ’n hotspot voor ‘urban culture’ in Eindhoven. Naast het populaire ‘street’ gedeelte heeft het indoor park ook een grote ‘bowl’, een miniramp, aparte ruimtes voor training; een full size park voor meerdere urban sports disciplines.
Sinds de ‘Dreamland’-expo in 2014 heeft Ulrike Jurklies ervoor gekozen om de producten van haar label mo man tai niet te presenteren tijdens Dutch Design Week, maar om zich te concentreren op het realiseren van een installatie voor het jaarlijkse evenement die start vanuit een meer persoonlijk onderwerp … Dutch Design Week is het moment om de meeste commerciële overwegingen van de ontwerpfase (n) achterwege te laten en zich uitsluitend te richten op het bieden van een bijzonder ervaring aan een bezoeker… een indruk; geïnspireerd door de expertise of specifieke materialen en processen die de ondersteunende partners bieden.”
Samenwerken met verschillende professionals; allen met hun specifieke vakmanschap en knowhow, stellen haar elk jaar opnieuw in staat om deze tentoonstellingen te realiseren. Zonder de partners hieronder zou het project van dit jaar niet mogelijk zijn geweest. Hun bijdrage, de inzet en expertise, professionele samenwerking en feedback was van onschatbare waarde vanaf het begin.

Van Duitse afkomst; voltooide Ulrike Jurklies eerst een opleiding in meubelmaken voordat ze industrieel ontwerp studeerde in München. Tijdens haar studie en na haar afstuderen werkte ze een tijd in Hong Kong. Hier besloot ze met een eigen merk te starten en richtte haar label mo man tai op in 2000. In 2004 verhuisde ze naar Nederland, waar het bedrijf nu gevestigd is.
Naast het ontwerpen van haar eigen producten biedt studio mo man tai ook diensten aan derden, gericht op creatieve samenwerking, op duurzaamheid en op het (her)gebruik van innovatieve materialen en processen. Sinds 2014 concipieert ze jaarlijks een installatie voor bezoekers van Dutch Design Week. De heldere, ongecompliceerde, kleurrijke esthetiek en de combinatie van oude tradities met moderne productietechnieken vormen de basis voor tijdloos design en gebruiksgemak. De meeste mo man tai producten laten de laatste ingreep aan de klant. De korte doe-het-zelf ervaring resulteert in een individueel mo man tai product dat hij/zij nóg meer waardeert.
De producten worden verkocht via verschillende winkels in Nederland en andere delen van de wereld.
Lokale bronnen en leveranciers zijn essentieel – korte transportroutes door het kiezen van nabijgelegen productielocaties garanderen een constante hoge kwaliteit. Alle producten worden gemaakt in Nederland, België of Duitsland. Een bewuste zorg voor het milieu door gebruik te maken van restanten van industriële productie en recyclebare materialen is vanaf het begin de rode draad geweest.
